We are in the times before the phoenix

We are in the times before the phoenix

Our Mother pulled apart

Ashes petal from the sky
No water

Waters reach the roofline
Unceasing

Much too much
And
Not enough

People pulled away from their hearts

They arrived here as children.

Children!

The promise–
New generation
New land

Now told
They are unwanted

They arrived here in chains

Chains!

Terror unceasing
Generations beaten
Over the land

Now told
Their lives still don’t matter

As the money
Rushes ever upstream

Much too much
And
Not enough

We are in the times before the Phoenix

Brokenhearted and dying
Fire and floodwater rising
Blood and hatred surging
Fear in every breath

And so we must
Burn

And so we must
Flood

And so we must
Return to bone
And sinew
And throbbing heart

Over and over
Until water and fire meet
And we each have enough
And we each know we are enough
Finally sated
As we hold our children’s hands

We raise our voice to the heavens
Strong with death and fire
And call her feathers forth
From this cloud of darkness
